Disc-Cover Xiren

By Adam Woodroof

Describing the sound of Xiren is almost as difficult as pronouncing his name.

Pronounced seer-rin, the Denver based musician and composer's self-titled debut album is an original work of art sure to please fans hungry for something fresh.
The album is a raw yet eclectic blend of acoustic, electric, classical and synth guitars, bass guitars, keyboards, pianos, and drums, most of which are played by the multitalented Xiren, who also engineered and produced e album.

Xiren's distinct vocals give the album a natural and authentic flavor. With a voice almost reminiscent of U2's Bono, Xiren's high-end vocal range may take a few listens to fully appreciate. Although traditional vocal melodies are lacking on most of the tracks, with the exception of "Bend of the Lu," "Circus" and "Nothing Better to do," Xiren's lyrics move seamlessly in a free flowing musical form.

His lyrics range from the fun "Get your groove on, yeah/Get your groove on while you can," ("Get Your Groove On"), to the funny "Here I lie/Drunk on the floor again/Waiting for you/To come and ignore me," ("Drunk Again"), to the personal "Love's a stupid game don't you see/Don't you don't dare play with me," ("Love's a Stupid Game"), to the just plain weird "There goes a bear on a bicycle/Jumping lion unicycle/Put me on your motorcycle and jettison me to the moon," ("Circus").

Innovative guitar effects mixed with acoustic guitars, keyboards and a variety of percussion fuel Xiren's music. His original sound takes a few tracks to get used to, but the listening pleasure is well worth the wait.
The album begins with the dance able tune "Get Your Groove On," with tasty guitar effects layered over a steady house beat with a noticeable Moby influence. "Bend of the Lu" is a beautiful blend of acoustic and classical guitars with a strong melody and sing able chorus.

"Drunk Again" has a strong Dave Matthew's Band flair, and the Latin inspired "El Boracho Y La Flamenca," with its Spanish Flamenco guitar is one of the album's best songs. The enchantingly beautiful melody of "Circus" adds depth, while the laid back acoustic rhythm of "Nothing Better to Do" gently brings the album to a close.

Xiren's passion for creation can be seen in the disclaimer on his Web page www.xiren.net: "Everything is fine now that you've made it here. All of your fears and dreams have been captured in music." Pick up his self-titled debut on IMP records and get caught up in Xiren's passion.
